What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy supports children and adults with communication, speech, language, voice and swallowing difficulties. A speech and language therapist (SLT) assesses how someone understands and uses language, produces speech sounds, interacts socially, or swallows food and drink safely, then builds a therapy plan around their goals. In the UK, speech and language therapists complete an approved degree and must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practise. You can read more about the profession at the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Who speech and language therapy helps

Speech and language therapists work with people of all ages. Independent SLTs on Therapyway list their specialisms on their profiles, which often include:

  • Children with delayed speech, unclear speech sounds or developmental language disorder
  • Social communication support for autistic children and adults
  • Stammering in children and adults
  • Communication difficulties after a stroke or brain injury, including aphasia
  • Voice difficulties, including for teachers, singers and other professional voice users
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
  • Communication support for people living with Parkinson's, dementia or other neurological conditions

If you're booking for a child, look for therapists who list paediatric experience. Profiles show who they work with and how.

What to expect from your first session

The first appointment is usually an assessment. For children this is often play-based: the therapist observes how your child communicates, asks about their development and daily life, and may screen speech sounds and understanding of language. For adults, the therapist takes a case history and assesses the specific difficulty, whether that's speech, language, voice or swallowing. Afterwards, the therapist explains what they found, agrees goals with you and recommends a plan. Parents and carers are usually given activities to practise between sessions, because little and often at home is where much of the progress happens. If you need a written report for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) application, school or an employer, discuss this with your therapist at the start.

How Therapyway works

Therapyway is a UK-wide marketplace for independent therapists, not a clinic. You search speech and language therapists by specialism, compare full profiles covering experience, specialisms, prices and availability, and book directly with the therapist you choose. Every speech and language therapist is checked against the HCPC register before their profile goes live. You don't need a GP referral, and there's no waiting list: you see real availability and pick a time that works for you.

What private sessions cost

Every speech and language therapist on Therapyway sets their own price, shown upfront on their profile before you book. A 50-minute session typically costs £60 to £120, and you pay per session with no subscription and no sign-up fee. Many therapists also offer a free introductory consultation, which is a good chance to describe your situation and check they're the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child needs speech and language therapy?

Every child develops differently, but common reasons parents seek an assessment include a child using fewer words than expected for their age, speech that is hard for people outside the family to understand, frustration when trying to communicate, or concerns raised by nursery or school. A speech and language therapist can assess your child and tell you whether therapy would help.

Do speech and language therapists work with adults?

Yes. Speech and language therapists support adults with communication difficulties after a stroke or brain injury, stammering, voice problems, swallowing difficulties, and communication changes linked to neurological conditions such as Parkinson's or dementia.

How much does private speech and language therapy cost?

Each therapist sets their own price, shown upfront on their profile. A 50-minute session typically costs between £60 and £120, and you pay per session with no subscription or sign-up fee. Many therapists offer a free introductory consultation.

Can speech and language therapy be done online?

Many speech and language therapists offer video sessions, which suit lots of language, fluency and voice goals. Some assessments and swallowing work are better in person. Each profile shows how the therapist works, and a free introductory consultation is a good place to ask what's right for your situation.

Do I need a referral for private speech and language therapy?

No. You can book a private speech and language therapist directly on Therapyway without a GP or school referral.

Are the speech and language therapists on Therapyway HCPC-registered?

Yes. Every speech and language therapist on Therapyway is checked against the Health and Care Professions Council register before their profile goes live.
